Another mystery flower
John just brought this back from his doggie walk:

I mean, WTF? I've never seen anything like this before.

Update: it's a species of Dichelostemma , also known as "firecracker flower". Curiously, it is closely related to a little blue flower, Dichelostemma multiflorum , that is also currently blooming here, though they look so different I can hardly believe they're even in the same family.

Wow, you may have discovered a new species ;)

Now, is it male, female, both or asexual or something in between?

It looks delicious, so it must be poisonous! Mother Nature's funny that way.

You could try posting it to [info]plants or [info]horticulture, someone in those communities might know. There's also [info]nametheplant, but it was just started, um, two days ago, and only has one member.

What is its scale?

When is Google™ going to come out with pattern-match searching? :)

The open flowers are about an inch long. See original post for identification.

In the Wikipedia article, it says "the flower hangs when it is in anthesis and holds itself erect as the fruit develops..."

Hrr, hrr, hrr, Beavis... he said "erect".

Actually, before you posted the species, I was going to say "don't fall asleep within creeping-tendril distance of the pod".

I was going to suggest Phimosis multiflora.

LOL. I want you to know that I did NOT have to do a Google search on that. ;-)

And I want you to know that I said it fully *expecting* you'd know.

Oh Linnaeus, you old scoundrel!
Wow. I never would have guessed it’s a Dichelostemma species. The most common one around here is Bluedicks, and it doesn’t look anything like that!
